God’s Word for You
Luke 10:23-24 Christ is our firm foundation
by Pastor Timothy Smith on Tuesday, June 19, 2018
23 He turned to the disciples and said privately, “Blessed are the eyes that see what you see! 24 Indeed, I tell you that many prophets and kings wanted to see the things that you are seeing but did not see them. They wanted to hear the things that you are hearing but did not hear them.”
The blessings Jesus points out are (1) things the disciples have seen, and (2) things the disciples have heard. Kings and prophets (and angels, 1 Peter 1:12) have wanted to see and hear what the disciples saw and heard.
The miracles of Jesus proclaim his almighty power and are proof that Jesus truly is God.
The great compassion of Jesus for all people, for Gentiles, women, little children, the sick, the lame, and even the dead, shows that God’s grace is not for a few, but for everyone.
The parables of Jesus open the minds of Christians and give us insight into the way God’s kingdom works. They illustrate the way of the gospel in the human heart and throughout the world.
The gospel preached by Jesus is the clearest gospel in all Scripture, offering forgiveness fully and freely to anyone who will simply not turn away from it.
The doctrines taught and explained by Jesus are profound, teaching us about the church, about fellowship, about the sacraments, about the roles of Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, about marriage, about the will of God, about the end of the world, and about the mysteries of grace, the resurrection, and eternal life.
Jesus’ preaching and teaching reveal God’s will in every aspect of our human experience. We are blessed by every word of Christ, as he himself said: “Man does not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God” (Matthew 4:4). “Everyone,” Jesus said (Matthew 7:4), “who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock.” Christ is our firm foundation.
